To raise community’s awareness on environmental issues, Konica Minolta holds “Emerald Learning Program 2017” series every year to encourage participants to protect our environment and treasure resources as well as putting it into practice during daily life. Our volunteer teams attended Green Upcycling Glass Workshop with students from Lutheran School For The Deaf at The Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre on 9 Dec 2017.

In Hong Kong, we are used to using disposable items such as plastic tableware, plastic takeaway lunchbox and bottled drinks resulting from improved life quality. In 2014, there was about 10% glass bottles recycled but the remaining were dumped in landfills. In order to equip students with knowledge about local municipal solid waste and develop reusing habits, we hold the workshop to make use of unwanted glass materials donated from a glass company due to site relocation.

Students unleashed their creativity and turned the unwanted glass into a personal-designed useful item. Participants shared the inspiration they got via the program, hoping that they can put what they learnt into practice as well as sharing with parents and friends.

As a part of community, we should treasure and make use of resources to support sustainable development such as avoiding using disposable items for the sake of less pressure on landfills. We will continue to organize more environment-related educational activities which can promote sustainable development towards young people and our community with the aim of conserving our natural scenery for next generations.
